Professional Teaching Dispositions
3 takeaways
I will never take for granted how valuable observing a classroom is in helping me develop general classroom management skills, pacing of lessons, behavior management, and over all classroom culture despite the subject being observed. Being able to observe in a middle school classroom reinforced my desire to hopefully teach in a middle school in the future, but that just as I was unable to observe a classroom in my content area yet still learned plenty, teaching in either high school or elementary will also be valuable.
At the beginning of the semester we did a tour at Polaris Expeditionary Learning School with Assistant Principal Starr Hill. It was a wonderful experience to see a school that has created such a tight knit community and positive and supportive attitude towards learning. This experience helped me see that when my time comes to apply for a job, I also need to do research on the type of school I want to work at because this will also be important to my success. I also hope to get to work at a school as fun and inclusive as Polaris.
We were also given a wonderful presentation at the beginning of the school year by Jennie Russel, a retired science teacher, on Classroom Management based on respect. This along with the Pump the Breaks presentation by Natalee Jacobson have deeply impacted how I view my approach to disruptive behavior in class and how many times stressors that are contributing to that behavior start with how I address my students and what type of classroom culture is established from the beginning. Those stressors may also be coming from outside school have nothing to do with me; getting to know my students and establishing good rapport will help mitigate those behaviors or, handle them appropriately if they arise.
I am looking forward to 450 in the fall and really hope to be placed in an art classroom. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to expand on initiative and dependability as a part of the CEPTC Dispositions. I hope to get more practice delivering and developing lessons effectively with minimal supervision. I am deeply committed to culturally responsive teaching and hope to demonstrate it during 450. I also hope to demonstrate and reflect my deep commitment to life-long learning.
