Art 325: Concepts in Art Education

I took Art 325, Concepts in Art Education, at CSU during the Fall Semester 2019. In this course, we learned about the development of artistic learning from toddlers to teenage years. Throughout the semester we learned about different philosophies, methods and strategies when it comes to teaching art. These tools are to lay the foundation and scaffold learning throughout the Art Education program at CSU.

I was assigned to a group with four other classmates and for our Service Learning Assignment, we got to teach 3D Artistic Abilities. When we started working on our lesson plans, none of us had a clue what we were doing. Once the ideas started flowing, we began to get very excited about teaching. We knew that not all of our ideas for lessons were feasible, but we were so enthusiastic, we almost hoped we could have done all of them. We were all very nervous during our first class, and not everything flowed exactly as we planned, but pretty soon, the experience started to feel more and more natural.  Every lesson generated more confidence in our abilities as teachers. By the end of our Service Learning journey, our confidence had grown immensely. This experience gave me insight into what the rest of my career will be like and it consolidated my commitment to this path and am more passionate than before to continue and learn everything I can to be the best teacher I can be.  Every facet of this class, from creating lesson plans, to interacting and working with students one on one and as a group in a classroom setting, as well as readings and class discussions, gave me insight into art teacher life. Students taught me more than anything I could have taught them.
