As children, we tend to idolize and idealize certain people in our lives. We look up to them, want to be with them and like them. As we get older, if we are fortunate, that idolization and idealization turn into respect and admiration, and sometimes, a deeper understanding of certain actions now that they are seen from the perspective of an adult. Sometimes however, those who controlled the narrative of the stories of our childhood lose that control and the idolization and idealization turn into realization that things are not as they seemed. That narrative while once placed on a pedestal with heroic connotations, can turn into shackles that bind us to a story we have grown and matured out of. Then there is always DNA, a destiny from which we cannot escape. While we may not be able to change appearance, or genetics, we can reclaim the narratives that were once controlled for us. We can polish and manipulate the shackles we cannot be biologically be set free from but can turn into beautiful cuffs that can adorn and remind us that we still have some control, we still have a say in that destiny.
